There are many ways you can volunteer with FSIP and you can read more about them here. Our key requirements at the moment are for:
- Volunteer Psychotherapists for la Prison Civile de Lome (see below)
- Volunteer Fundraisers working from home, online or from Galway
- Volunteers with experience in Marketing and Social Media for 6 month internships
- Volunteers to help with grant applications
We also have a vacancy for TWO NEW TRUSTEES to join our board – preferably based in Ireland. See here more more information about the role of Trustees in a charity and then send us an email outlining your skills and detailing the work you feel you could do to help our charity. Please also attach your curriculum. We are particularly interested in future Trustees who have Accountancy experience and Social Media/Marketing/Fundraising experience.
See here for more information about any of the above vacancies, or read below if you are a potential volunteer psychotherapist interested in volunteering in Africa.
FSIP is currently sending qualified volunteer psychotherapists to Togo. If you would like to apply, please get in touch well in advance of your anticipated travel dates. You will need to send a copy of your certificate and CV along with your application form. Note that your certificate must be from an established UK, Irish or other European training institution and you must be either accredited or working towards accreditation with at least 200 hours of one on one experience. Placement hours are accredited by IACP so you can gain hours in Togo to count towards your professional accreditation.
We are looking for therapists who can demonstrate not only knowledge and experience of therapeutic practice, but also the endurance and emotional capacity to deal with what can be a very challenging, emotional, chaotic and disorganised environment.
Please note that for the moment, we are not requesting applications from counsellors who have studied a course that lasted 2 years or less, nor from CBT practitioners who do not have a full psychotherapy training involving at least 80 hours of their own therapy. This is due to requirements which have been agreed with our local partners in Togo.
Volunteer in Africa: What’s in it for you?
Although we look for volunteers who are ready and willing to give their time and skills freely and openly for the experience alone…whatever the position applied for….it should also be noted that this type of work tends to be extremely educational and personally fulfilling.
We will provide references for all therapists and volunteers upon successful completion of the work and will also support you remotely during placement in Africa, via weekly online supervision and check-ins. A placement in an African prison will greatly enhance your curriculum as well as deepening your knowledge.
How to apply
The Application Form is available here.
Before filling it in, please think carefully about your available dates and the amount of time you wish to spend in Togo, and ensure you leave enough time to go through the interview process and to raise the funds needed for your flight, accommodation, insurance and spending money.
You may volunteer for anything from 5 weeks up to one year, as we believe that one month (of 5-6 days per week) is the absolute minimum required to make an impact in the prison and to provide real benefit to the prisoners and to our local partners.
If you would like to make a case for provision of another type of therapy in the prison, or if you would like to provide a skill such as language lessons, yoga, dance, etc, please email us with your proposal and your certificates and we will review and get back to you within a few days.
